Renew Our Rivers, Bankhead Lake Cleanup , May 31, 2008.
Birmingham, Alabama: Join us for the 5th annual Bankhead Lake Cleanup on Saturday,
May 31st, 2008, 8am - Noon at Buddy Vines Camp. Bankhead Lake, part of the Black Warrior River System, provides a valuable resource and many recreational opportunities for the region. The Renew Our Rivers Bankhead Lake Cleanup will coordinate and utilize the efforts of Alabama Power Company’s Renew Our Rivers program, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ National Public Lands Day, and a dozen other local agencies, community groups and businesses for the cleanup.
Last year 93 volunteers removed 5.8 tons of trash and debris. Several weeks before the clean up a group of lake residents mark heavy trash items (i.e. propane tanks, refrigerators, and tires.) On the week of the clean up, Alabama Power, with a contingent of employee volunteers removed the heavy items that could not be removed by individual volunteers. At the Saturday event, volunteers removed additional heavy items, plastic bottles, and trash from sloughs.
For more information on how to participate in the Cleanup, call Kellie Johnston at (205) 264-8461 or Mark Meador at (205) 553-9373. Lunch and refreshments will be provided at noon for volunteers. Boats and related equipment useful for the cleanup are welcome.
